Catahoula Leopard Dog Breed Information
The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is easily recognized by his short coat, broad head, and drooping ears. If left undocked, his tail will look like a long, natural extension of his back. The breed grows to a medium to medium-large size. Like many other dogs in this size bracket, the Catahoula has a lot of powerful muscles that he uses to be agile and playful. All in all, the Catahoula is a breed unlike any other. His unique body structure is nothing like a sighthound or bulldog. Instead, his body will be slightly longer than tall. About 50 to 60% of his height is between his elbows to the ground.
The Catahoula Leopard Dog Breed has a very unique coat. Due to the breed’s name, most people would assume that all Catahoulas have a leopard-like coat and blue eyes. Instead, the breed is well-known for having plenty of variations. There are many unusual colors and patterns of the coat and eye color will vary. The Catahoula is often evaluated as a multi-purpose working dog, although the dog’s disproportionate body structure can affect his ability to work.
Catahoula Leopard Dog Breed. Body type
The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog has a very unique body structure. A properly proportioned dog will be slightly longer than tall. This makes him somewhat on the short side. His topline will incline downward from his withers, but only slightly. This gives him a more level back. His back will always be broad and full of muscles. He will have a short, slightly arched loin, with a slightly longer loin seen in some females.
The ribs of a Catahoula will extend out from the spine, giving the chest a very deep appearance. His broad chest will reach his elbows in most cases. His bulky appearance changes when viewed from the side. His forchest is actually extended, creating a shallow oval shape towards the front of his forelegs. This appearance isn’t exaggerated, although the tuck-up is noticeable. The croup is slightly sloping and is a medium to long length. His rear will be slightly elevated due to his straighter rear angulation. His slight elevation is acceptable, and should not be severely penalized in competition.
Catahoula Leopard Dog Breed. Coat
The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog has a single coat. His coat will be a short to medium length and lie close to the body. While his fur is flat, his texture can vary from smooth to coarse. There is no breed preference for coat type
Catahoula Leopard Dog Breed. Color
One of the best things about the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog is that they come in a very wide variety of colors and patterns. Every color combination has color points or trim as part of the pattern. These points or trim can be located on the cheeks, above the eyes, chest, underbody, under the tail, or on the legs. If the dog has the famous leopard pattern, there will be a base color that has contrasting spots consisting of other colors. Some, known as solids, will have a single coat color. Brindle patterns may also appear in the breed and these can have a light or dark base coat with stripes of a contrasting color.
Patchwork patterns are also fairly common with the breed. The patchwork pattern may have a very prominent solid color with one or more patches. His patches can be one or more colors and will appear randomly on the body.
When judging between individual dogs, the coat color can quickly become a deciding factor. When the dogs are of equal quality, a darker color that is rich and vibrant is preferred over lighter shades.
If the dog is being judged for his working ability, the coat color is considered irrelevant and not usually judged. The breed has so many different coat and color variations that no one coat style, color, or pattern is preferred over the other.
